The work takes its title from a description of a roadside picnic, which gives name to Arkady and Boris Strugatsky’s science fiction novel that then was interpreted onto the screen as the film Stalker by Andrei Tarkovsky.

Within the drawing, some words are discernible, giving clues to the text of the book which has its form flattened as the pages layers were reprinted on top of each other and thus leaving story unreadable

I am interested to see how the permutations fold in thought around the different objects and dimensionality and how this might relate with the journey within the story. I am particularly drawn to Tarkovsky’s style of minimal effects to draw on our relationship to time, space and emotion rather than fantastical effects, that resonates for both the protagonist’s and viewer’s internal quest for a certain knowledge or self discovery.

Rory O’Connor (born in 1978, Ireland) is an artist based in Berlin. He completed a MFA in sculpture at Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, London, UK in 2015, and previously a BFA in Sculpture/Env Art at Glasgow School of Art, UK in 2012.

Rory examines the relationship of sculptural language to the interpretation of space. He is drawn to elements like geometry and its functional role within the design of objects and architecture, incorporating precision and standards to the built world around us. His process manipulates the materials and tools, that range from their raw state to designed end products, with wonder at their aesthetic draw, physics, means of production, function and component process in the design of space.
